[He'd drove all night, habitually remembering to drink from the cold flask of cheap coffee he'd picked up from a diner and even more habitually to chew on aspirin. He had to keep the pain in his arm at bay, occasionally it would spasm causing him to jerk the wheel to one side. His eyes were aching, and either that was because of the exhaustion or the emotions which were rattling around in his head, both of which weren't things he was able to take care of right then.

He'd eventually caved in and put on the radio, listening to some random popular music station so he wasn't left with just his own thoughts. He didn't exactly enjoy the music but it was better than utter silence, every now and again he'd press a wad of napkins against his temple, which had crusted over but wasn't entirely finished bleeding yet.

Finally reaching the town he'd left Owen in earlier that day, or actually the day before considering it was now five in the morning, he could've simply ran but he'd either end up running into a wall or phasing half way through one and winding up dead.

He parked the car in the same car park he'd left the BMW and transfers the chest from one trunk to the other, after all he'd rather ditch Al's car for the stolen motor, regardless of the convenience of having a car with actual insurance papers.

Finally he drags himself into the corridors of the hotel, it seeming deadly quiet for the fact it was so early, he vaguely remembers Owen's room number having only seen it once before and slumps against the doorframe, tapping lightly on it and hoping Owen would hear.]

Owen? 's me... I mean, Five, y'there?

You're not-- [He only has to pause for a moment before finishing his sentence.] ...Stupid. Christ, that's going to take some getting used to.

[He grins.] Just one of those things, 'm sure y'can get pretty habitual with magic?

'n no.. I just like vodka, not everythin' has t'be a fetish.

...You can. But it can be dangerous, to get too... Reliant on it. It can be addictive, in its own way.

You're disappointing me again. [Jason gets a teasing smirk and a kiss to the cheek before Owen pulls up the handle of his case and wheels it to the door, holding it open for him.]

Wait it's addictive? Like a drug...? [Colour Jason surprised.]

Oh really? I'd hate t'be a disappointment. In future I'll think of wild elaborate things before admittin' the normal reason behind 'em.

Well, it depends on the person and the intention and your... Awareness, I think, but it can be.

[He smirks.] You do that.

'm surprised... can anyone do it?

[He's genuinely interested and forgets his flirtation for the moment, the question of magic is a lot more interesting to him.]

In theory. But it's like anything, you know-- Anyone can play the piano if they practice often enough, or write a novel if they put forth enough effort. But not everyone will ever be able to play a symphony or write a best-seller, even if they do have the determination to work hard enough to get that far. You know?

[Five totally didn't just consider adding magic to his repertoire of things that made his life significantly easier.]

[Owen would be happy to teach him, if he were interested. ...Well, he'd at least be happy to try.]

You're as transparent as glass, you know. I can basically see the wheels turning up there.

[He has the good grace to duck his head.]

They don't turn often, 's a good thing.

[But it's so cute!]

[He tries his best to look entirely innocent.]

'm serious, really... y'should take advantages of my high-level thought processes while they last.

...And how would I go about doing that?

Well y'could explain the basics. Of magic... if y'want, that is.

Well, it's mostly about harnessing the underlying energies of the world around us and bending them to new ends... Changing it into matter, or kinetic energy, or bending reality, for example.

But it's also possible to tap into the power of particular gods or spirits or demons from other worlds with invocations or prayers. Obviously, that one sounds like it has more potential for trouble, but you'd be surprised. The power to literally bend the world to your will can be incredibly... intoxicating, if you don't have the proper respect for nature and the balance that supports it.

[He nods, probably for the first time paying absolute attention in the same way he would during the more serious of training sessions.]

So its all about absorbin' energy to change it into somethin' else. I wonder how it would work, with me being an alien. I mean, that could give me a celestial edge in some way.

[Oh yeah, Jason, reveal you were thinking about doing magic why don't you.]

[And Owen is fascinated by that change.]

It might-- you might very very skilled at it, or the type of magic that I'm familiar with might not work for you at all. There isn't really any way to know unless you try it and see what sort of conduit you make.

[Was that supposed to be some sort of surprise? Transparent alien is transparent! It's not as if Owen minds him considering it anyway.]

Well, okay.. so I've read books. [EGAD.] 'n weren't the druids into heavy celestial crap, or is that just, uh, fiction. I mean, it's a new skill... 'n the Mogs definitely can't do magic 'n I could learn things like concealment spells 'n things that make me untraceable. If those kinds of things even exist...

[Meet the new, level headed and practical Jason who actually knew how to get shit done without sex and alcohol.]

And I won't even tease you about it.

Well, the heavens are just an extension of nature, of course, so they have as much a place as anything else... There are different schools of thought on magic, different approaches, different beliefs... But yes, cosmology is usually considered to have influence, and there are certainly spells for that.

[Consider Owen suitably impressed.]

Well then maybe sometime in England, if this whole thing works out, y'could show me a few things, see if it'd be able t'go anywhere?

[They're at the bar, then, and obviously it isn't the place to continue that kind of conversation but it could always be something to talk about on the plane if he couldn't sleep.]

...I'd really like that, actually.

[And he'll now try to distract from the fact that he may be blushing slightly by snagging them a booth.]

We shouldn't get drunk before we fly, you know. It's awful on the body.

Hey I'm sure makin' magic's a great way t'bond.

[He grins.] 'n we're not gettin' drunk, we're havin' a pre-flight drink! Totally different scenario.

...You did not just make that euphemism.

I did, I really did. [Smirk.]

Hey, 'm not the kind of 'get drunk 'n then get on a plain' kind of guy. 'm more get drunk then return to a hotel room, as you know already.

Sssh. It's easier for me to pretend you didn't if you don't repeat it. [But he's laughing.]

Well, unfortunately for you, your hotel room for the night is on the other side of the Atlantic. ...Actually, speaking of that, I should find somewhere for you now...

[And the phone comes out again.]
